Pit Crew Salaries Just something I thought to share with the group. Read the second story concerning a Michael Waltrip tire changer who was fired. I realize they have other duties, but I was surprised at the salary no matter what the duties.

Could almost buy a house on Lake Norman with that kind of dough. The cause of- and solution to- all of life's problems. I remember reading somewhere that an average F1 crewmen makes , USD. I'll try to find the link. ESPN reported, 50k base, 97k hazard over the wall and 13k for training.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Pit Crew Job Responsibilities and Salaries

Can someone answer me this question. Has Indycar gone to just pure pitcrew teams like the big boys at Hendrick, Roush, etc? I was under the impression the OTW guys in Indycar are also shop guys whereas in Cup most teams have gone to a pure pit team group.

Very few are mechanics, most are just former athletes and its there full time job to train and pit the car. I was surprised to see the high salary on the MWR guy also but it appears he's doing both shop and pit crew work. View Profile View Forum Posts View Blog Entries View Articles. It is a bit. Remember Bruno Junqueira at Sonoma in complaining how his pit crew were so slow because they were volunteers? I've also heard the guys sleeping 8 guys in a double room in a seedy hotel. Want to be an IndyCar pit crewman? Bring your sleeping bag! That's not to take anything away from these guys though, they're real troopers and love the sport.

Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats. Blood-1 View Profile View Forum Posts View Blog Entries View Articles. By the standards of US pro sports they could plausibly be way higher.

In IndyCar as long as they get the wheel on smoothly who cares the tires are already there and you're waiting for fuel, you don't need to hire a guy just to do that. Even in F1 you're responsible for roughly one small action. Many of the NASCAR pit guys also hire themselves out as a team or individually and do stops for Xfinity and Truck series teams. That being said, there are a few Cup teams that still haven't gone the specialization route and still have their mechanics doing the pit stops as well.

In Indycars, it is the guys and occasional gal that works on the car also doing the pit stops. As far as the money in Indycar goes, now that the season is only about six months long, more and more people are getting out of it because it doesn't make any sense financially to only be employed six months out of the year.

Most of the people I know have. On a side note, a friend of mine who was a "road warrior" for a couple different teams back in the '90's and early 's. He used to come out of retirement to do pit stops for the every year. Originally Posted by Blood IowaBoyinIndy View Profile View Forum Posts View Blog Entries View Articles. A friend of my uncle caught the NASCAR fever bug and ended up driving a semi for a race team. We had dinner with him and he looked exhausted. It was BY weekend when it was in August and he hadn't seen his apartment in Charlotte since Mother's Day.

Yes he made quite a bit of money and a lot of his expenses were paid for but he never had time to spend any of it or enjoy it because they were on the road all of the time. His only friends were fellow team members - the people that he roamed the highways with - because he no longer saw anyone else. For them it started in January to pick up the new or refurbished semis every year and only ended in late November. He only did it for a few years too.
